Orb’s @ Portland Castle
Source: Anonymous

The History

Portland Castle stands today as one of the best preserved Henrician coastal defences. It dates back to 1538 and was in duty by 1540. Henry VIII ordered the conception of Portland Castle due to a growing threat from foreign invaders, as Portland held a strategic place in the English Channel. Portland Castle, and it’s nearby cousin Sandsfoot (1539) were part of a fortification campaign to bolster English defences following King Henry’s break from Catholicism in 1531.

The Castle was manned and ready for the Spanish Armada in 1588, but didn’t see combat until the 17th Century Civil War. In 1870 following private ownership, and restoration it was back in Government hands. The Royal Navy used it for a number of means in the 20th Century. And in 1984 it passed to English Heritage, who now maintain and look after what is a true English Treasure.

The Paranormal

Staff and visitors to Portland Castle experiences phenomena on a regular basis. Many Orb’s thought to be the first manifestation of a Ghost have been caught on this summers Ghost tours. As the image above shows. It is important to stress this could just be camera flare, or dust. It must also be noted that Orb’s are open to judgement on a regular basis.

The Castle however, does have an interesting Paranormal past…

Dr Richard Wiseman during the Civil War, reportedly performed operations on the kitchen table, that has resulted in specific phenomena being reported at this location. The Smell of lavender on the staircase, and an unseen presence rushing past visitors on the ramparts are just a few testimonies of a venue still holding on to it’s past secrets.
